Is Doula Work Recession-Proof? Why more families in California and across the country are seeking doula support—and why we’re seeing this shift.

Birth Doesn’t Pause in Uncertain Times

In times of economic uncertainty, many things begin to shift.
Plans are postponed.
People become more cautious about how they spend and commit.

And yet—birth continues.

Families across the country, including here in Sacramento, CA and throughout the Bay Area, are still moving through pregnancy, labor, and postpartum. They still cross this threshold—often needing more support, not less.

This is one of the reasons doula work is often described as “recession-resistant.”
Not because it is immune to change, but because it is rooted in a need that doesn’t disappear.

Doula Support Is Not “Extra”

For many years, doula care has been seen as something optional—something added if circumstances and resources allow.

But this doesn’t reflect the deeper reality.

Support during birth and postpartum has always been part of how humans care for one another. Historically, it lived within community—shared among experienced women, family members, and support networks.

What has changed is not the need.
It’s the structure around it.

The Gap Many Families Are Navigating

Today, many families throughout California and our country are moving through birth within much smaller circles of support.
Extended family may not be nearby.
Community structures may be limited.

As a result, the responsibility of navigating birth and early parenting often falls on just one or two people.

This can leave families feeling:

  • Overwhelmed
  • Under-supported
  • Unsure of how to prepare or what to expect

Not because they are doing anything wrong—
but because they are being asked to do something humans were never meant to do alone.

A Shift Toward Greater Access

We’re now beginning to see a meaningful shift.

California has been at the forefront of expanding Medicaid (Medi-Cal) coverage for doula services, making this care more accessible to families across the state. We see similar shifts unfolding in other parts of the country as well.

This is significant.

It means:

  • More families can access doula support
  • Doula care is becoming more integrated into healthcare systems
  • The profession is gaining visibility and recognition

While this shift is still evolving, it reflects a growing understanding:
support during birth improves outcomes and experiences.

Why Doula Work Can Feel More Stable

Doula work tends to grow differently than many other professions.

Doulas build their practices through:

  • Networking with other Birthworkers
  • Building relationships with local providers
  • Community referrals
  • Word of mouth

Clients often come through trusted connections—from families, midwives, nurses, and past clients who remember how much they helped.

Because of this, many doulas find that their work develops a sense of steadiness over time.

Not because it’s easy.
But because it is rooted in connection and care.

This Work Requires More Than Skills

While there is growing demand for birth doulas in California and around our country, this is not work that can be reduced to a checklist.

Doulas are often present in moments that are:

  • Intense
  • Vulnerable
  • Unpredictable

What matters is not only what you do—
but how you are able to be present.

This includes:

  • Staying grounded in the midst of intensity
  • Listening without judgment
  • Recognizing emotional and nervous system responses
  • Supporting without taking over

This is where trauma-informed care becomes essential.

Stepping into This Work

If you feel drawn to becoming a birth doula, it’s probably because you recognize the importance of this kind of support.

At Sierra Doula Academy, we focus not only on the practical aspects of doula work, but on cultivating the capacity to offer care that is attuned, respectful, and present.

Students learn how to:

  • Support families through the full arc of birth and postpartum
  • Understand the impact of trauma and stress on the body
  • Stay present and responsive in real time

Because ultimately, this work is about more than information.
It’s about connection and safety.

A Meaningful Path Forward

Doula work is not a quick or easy path.
It is relational, evolving, and deeply human.

And for that reason, it can offer a kind of steadiness—
both practically and personally.

As awareness grows and access expands, more families are seeking this kind of support.

And more doulas are stepping in to meet that need.
