We offer several continuing education learning opportunities at SDA– both in-person and online classes. Many of these classes provide CEUs (Continuing Education Units) through DONA International and other organizations. CEUs are essential for Certified Doulas when it’s time to recertify, but many of these classes also provide CEUs that Labor & Delivery Nurses, NICU Nurses, Midwives, etc. can use for re-certification or licensing.

This class provides a solid foundation in the basics of breastfeeding and will enhance your knowledge and skills to better support nursing dyads. Tailored for doulas, midwives, and anyone seeking to increase their expertise in lactation support. The course will cover these essential topics:
- Anatomy and physiology of the lactating breast
- Best practices for supporting breastfeeding after birth

Tonya is a seasoned birth and postpartum doula and Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) who is passionate about helping families feel informed, supported, and confident in their breastfeeding journey. She brings years of experience guiding parents through pregnancy, birth, postpartum recovery, and infant feeding with compassion and evidence-based care.
Tonya has been part of the Sierra Doula Academy teaching team since 2019, where she also teaches postpartum care and newborn support.
Attendance fulfills the Lactation Support Education Component for Birth and Postpartum Doula certification with DONA International.

Class sizes are intentionally kept small to encourage discussion, personalized guidance, and meaningful connection with other doulas navigating similar questions. Upon completion, participants receive 5 DONA International CEUs.

For more than 40 years, Janine Maitri has supported families through pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period while mentoring and educating the next generation of birth professionals. As a DONA-approved birth doula trainer for over 30 years and an Advanced Continuing Education Provider with DONA International, she has trained thousands of doulas and helped birth professionals build the knowledge, confidence, and professional foundation needed to thrive in birth work.
Drawing from decades of experience as both a birth professional and small business owner, Janine brings practical guidance, thoughtful mentorship, and an honest perspective on what it takes to build a successful, sustainable doula practice. Her goal isn’t simply to help doulas start a business—it’s to help them build meaningful, sustainable careers rooted in compassionate care, professional excellence, and lifelong learning.
